The African American Genealogy Group (AAGG), a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, was founded in January 1989 in response to the ever-increasing number of people who express a desire to research their family “roots.” AAGG is dedicated to the encouragement of and support for genealogy research and serves the African American community of Philadelphia and the Tri-State area. Our membership has steadily grown with the addition of both novice and advanced researchers. AAGG encourages members to become actively involved with the programs and committees of our organization.

The African-American Experience in Ohio 1850-1920 is a digital collection brought together from a number of individual sources specifically for this project. These sources include manuscript collections, newspaper articles, serials, photographs, and pamphlets. It was our intention to bring together as many diverse sources as possible to provide evidence of the diversity and complexity of African-American culture during this time period and to let those sources tell their own story without interpretation. The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands... ...often referred to as the Freedmen's Bureau, was established in the War Department by an act of March 3, 1865. The Bureau supervised all relief and educational activities relating to refugees and freedmen, including issuing rations, clothing and medicine. The Bureau also assumed custody of confiscated lands or property in the former Confederate States, border states, District of Columbia, and Indian Territory. The bureau records were created or maintained by bureau headquarters, the assistant commissioners and the state superintendents of education and included personnel records and a variety of standard reports concerning bureau programs and conditions in the states.

The Samford Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR) provides an educational forum for the discovery, critical evaluation, and use of genealogical sources and methodology through a week of intensive study led by nationally prominent genealogical educators. Students choose one of the offered courses that last throughout the week and that range from a course for beginners to courses on specialized topics. The institute is academically and professionally oriented and is cosponsored by the Board for Certification of Genealogists. The faculty is composed of outstanding nationally known genealogy educators. Begun in 1962, the institute regularly enrolls over 200 students from around the country.

Our mission also includes educating others about the use of genetics in genealogy. This can be accomplished through workshops, this website, speaker's bureau, forums, and meetings. After an incredible inaugural year, The Midwestern African American Genealogy Institute (MAAGI) is looking ahead to this year's Institute! MAAGI 2014 will provide an educational training for the learning methods and strategies of exploring African ancestored family history. The classes at MAAGI will be lead by faculty members who have already demonstrated their knowledge in a number of subject areas, and who have already demonstrated their leadership in the exploration of African ancestored family history research.

The National Archives holds Federal military service records from the Revolutionary War to 1912 in the National Archives Building in Washington, D.C. See details of holdings. Military records from WWI - present are held in the National Military Personnel Records Center (NPRC), in St. Louis, Missouri, See details of holdings. The National Archives does not hold state militia records. For these records, you will need to contact the appropriate State Archives.
